DIY Modern, Colorblock Granny Square Baby Blanket Pattern

Crochet and modern are not necessarily two words you associate with each other. However, this colorblock granny square blank modernizes crochet with bold colors and a simple, geometric design. I based my pattern off of Purl Bee’s Rainbow Blanket; using their basic idea with a different inside square pattern and an added outer blanket border. I selected a mix of purples and pinks to create a blanket for our baby girl, but this  blanket would look wonderful in any number of color combinations! Keep reading for the pattern.

Supplies

To make this exact blanket (finished size: 33″ x 38″) you will need:

You can feel free to substitute a different DK weight yarn, just be sure it is washable!

PATTERN

Round 2 // Chain 3, skip stitch and double crochet in next stitch. *In corner, 2 double crochet, chain 3, 2 double crochet, double crochet, skip stitch, double crochet*, repeat three more times and join to first chain with slip stitch

OUTER SQUARE BORDERS

Round 1 // Join border color in corner space. Chain 3, double crochet, chain 2, 2 double crochet in corner space. *Double crochet in each stitch to next corner (15 dc), 2 double crochet, chain 2, 2 double crochet in corner*, repeat two more times and join to first chain with slip stitch

Round 2 // Chain 3, double crochet, *5 double crochet in corner, double crochet in each stitch to next corner (19 dc)*, repeat three more times and join to first chain with slip stitch. Cut yarn and pull through stitch.

Create 14 squares of each color for a total of 56 squares.

JOINING SQUARES + OUTER BORDER

I assembled my squares with two rows of each color, seven squares in each row. This makes a blanket that is seven by eight squares. Join squares by sewing them together with a darning needle and whip stitch. Catch both of the top chains in whip stitch for solid, flat appearance. The hardest part of this is properly aligning all the squares. Take your time on the first few!

OUTER BLANKET BORDER

FINISHED BLANKET SIZE // 33″ x 38″

Round 1 // Join yarn at corner. Chain 3, 4 double crochet in same stitch. *Double crochet in each stitch to next corner, 5 double crochet in third of five corner stitches*, repeat two more times and join with slip stitch

Round 2 // Chain 3, double crochet in next stitch, 5 double crochet in next stitch. *Double crochet in each stitch to next corner, 5 double crochet in third of five corner stitches*, repeat two more times and join with slip stitch. Cut yarn and pull through. Weave in ends with darning needle.

Block your work and admire!
