Finally, a new post! As you can probably imagine, my life became quite hectic following Charlotte’s birth. Between moving, a new baby, and trying to keep Modernly Wed running, I have not been left with much time to dedicate to this blog. Now that Charlotte has some semblance of a sleep schedule, I have a free hour or two in the evening! Glorious.
This post is one I have been meaning to share for a while. During my pregnancy with Charlotte, I took photos every 2-3 weeks wearing the same dress with the intention of creating a progression composite as a memento. I found out I was pregnant VERY early, so my progression starts way back at four weeks, and ends with Charlotte in my arms at week forty.
The hardest part of this progression was finding a dress that would fit through my entire pregnancy, but still show the change in bump size. I happened across this blue and black striped stretchy maternity dress at H&M and purchased it one size up from my pre-pregnancy size. A belt and chip clips are holding the extra fabric in the early images… but boy did I need that fabric by the end!
Now that I am nearing the end of my third trimester, I feel “seasoned” enough to offer you my top ten pregnancy essentials! These are items that have been indispensable during the last eight and a half months and I hope they will bring you some much needed comfort as well. In no particular order:
#1: Camelbak Eddy Bottle // I have been wildly thirsty throughout my entire pregnancy, so I carry this bottle with me everywhere… literally. It holds a whopping 750 mL of water and the bite-lock is spill proof, making it easy to throw in your purse. It is extremely important to stay hydrated while pregnant. Dehydration can bring on early contractions, cramps, nausea and more.
#2: Bio-oil 4.2oz // It seems a bit pricey, but a little goes a long way. I have slathered this on once or twice a day since the positive test. I can’t definitively say that it prevents stretch marks (though I don’t have any… yet), but it helps to keep your expanding belly soft. Many also claim that it will help fade stretch marks, so any leftover can be put to good use after your pregnancy.
#3: Blanqi Body Styler Support Tank // These are a lifesaver! I have one in the normal length in black and one in the longer length in white. These tanks help to smooth and shape your belly to create the perfect bump while also providing built-in support for your back and belly. On days I don’t wear this tank, I am noticeably achey under my belly and on my lower back. Bonus: the tanks can also be used to hold up your pre-pregnancy pants!
#4: Philosophy Purity Made Simple One-Step Facial Cleanser // When you are pregnant, you are supposed to avoid cosmetics and cleansers with certain chemical ingredients. The more natural, the better. Luckily, I had already been using this Purity cleanser which is made with gentle ingredients. It is fabulous, even removing eye makeup in one step without drying the skin.
#5: Leachco Back ‘N Belly Chic // Oh my, you definitely need one of these! I purchased mine in the first trimester to make sure I could get the most out of this pricey pillow. Now I can’t imagine sleeping without it! It provides support for my belly and back, while allowing me to flip from side to side in my sleep without moving the pillow. Warning: this pillow is large and will take up a lot of real estate in your bed. I wouldn’t recommend this if you don’t have a queen size bed or larger.
#6: Tums Antacid/Calcium Tablets, Assorted Fruit // For the most part, I managed to avoid morning sickness in the first trimester, but now I am paying for it with acid reflux. These Tums are great to have on hand to combat the burning after meals. Also, my dentist recommends that all pregnant women chew one tablet before bed to avoid overnight acid wash on back teeth.
#7: Ben & Jerry’s Greek Frozen Yogurt // My go-to pregnancy indulgence. I have been eating 1/3 of a container nearly every night this pregnancy. So good, and since it is made with yogurt it is practically health food.
#8: Banana Boat Natural Reflect Sunscreen // It turns out pregnant women aren’t supposed to apply lotions with oxybenzone, the main chemical ingredient in sunscreens. Being excessively pale, and pregnant over the summer, I set out to find an affordable, natural alternative. The Natural Reflect sunscreens from Banana Boat use 100% natural Zinc Oxide for UVA and UVB protection. It works very well, but is fairly thick and a little difficult to apply.
#9: GorillaPod SLR-Zoom Flexible Tripod and Nikon Wireless Remote // I have been taking self-portraits every 2-3 weeks to document my belly progression with the help of this tripod and remote. I don’t have a full size tripod, but the GorillaPod placed on my kitchen counter is a great height for my needs. These items will help you take better quality images than the typical “cell phone picture in the bathroom mirror” belly shot!
#10: Upsie Belly by Belly Bandit // Now that I am well into the third trimester, my belly is quite large and heavy. This belt provides more support than the tanks mentioned above and is great to wear while at the gym. Also, an internal pocket holds the included hot/cold pack against your lower back for added relief! As a bonus, you can flip the Upsie Belly belt after delivery for use as a post-partum belly shaper/binder.
Welcome to Live Modernly! This will be a blog dedicated to all things post-wedding, including pregnancy, family, interior design, entertaining, cooking, DIY projects, fashion and more. Since becoming pregnant with my first child (see image above of me at 32 weeks), I realized that the modern inspiration shouldn’t end with the reception. I haven’t yet decided how many times a week or exactly what type of content I will post here; I plan to let Live Modernly evolve and shape itself as time passes. I hope you will join me in this next chapter of my life!
