LUSH Caca Brun Mama Natural Hair Color Tutorial + Results

Today, I want to share with you a different type of hair dyeing experience. I have not dyed my hair in about ten years, but recently decided I wanted to slightly darken my natural hair color. After buying a standard boxed chemical hair dye and reading about the required 48 hour allergy test (and subsequently googling and reading up on PPD), I decided to try a more natural route. I went to a local LUSH store and purchased LUSH Caca Brun Mama. This hair dye combines henna, indigo, and coffee for color with a cocoa butter base for softness and shine. I loved the idea that the hair color would actually make my hair healthier. The LUSH henna dyes come in four shades: Rouge (red), Marron (chestnut), Brun (rich brown), and Noir (black). At the store they told me you can also mix the colors to create your own custom shade.

Note: I read that you should not use henna hair dye on chemically dyed hair, so research before using henna if you have existing salon color!

Read on for the tools, process and before and after images. Also, please ignore the fact that I am in desperate need of a hair cut!!

  • LUSH Caca Brun Mama, or the color of your choosing. I used three cubes for my shoulder length hair, but you should adjust the quantity based on your length and thickness.
  • Rubber gloves
  • Drop cloth
  • Wooden or plastic spoon for mixing; I read that metal may interfere with the color
  • An old shirt that you don’t mind staining
  • Shower cap or plastic wrap (optional)
  • Lots of conditioner
  • A friend to help apply the mixture

Step One// Set up a double boiler on your stove top. I used a pot with a pyrex bowl nested on top. Bring water to a boil. Simultaneously prepare a mug of nearly boiling water.

Step Two// Lay a drop cloth down in the area you will be applying the henna, as it will be messy!

Step Three// Break off desired number of LUSH Caca henna cubes and chop roughly. See first image in post.

Step Four// Place chopped henna into the double boiler bowl and pour in the nearly boiling water to just cover the henna. Stir until henna dissolves completely and you are left with a paste the consistency of brownie batter.

Step Five// Allow the mixture to cool until it is a comfortable temperature to apply to your scalp. Keep the mixture as warm as possible during application.

Step Six// Using rubber gloves, section your dry hair and apply the henna mixture from the root to the ends of each section.

Step Seven// Once all of your hair is covered, twist it up and clip it in place. Cover with shower cap or plastic wrap to bring out more red tones; leave uncovered to bring out more blue tones.

Step Eight// Leave mixture on you hair for 2-6 hours. I left mine on for 4 hours.

Step Nine// Wash the henna out of your hair in the shower. Use lots of conditioner to loosen the chunks. This will take a while!

Step Ten// Blow dry your hair and admire your new color and super soft hair!

Take a look at my before and after results following my LUSH Caca Brun Mama application below:

In the before picture, my hair had been blown out in the morning and then worn up most of the day. I have wavy texture and hair that tends to get frizzy. Following the henna, my hair was much smoother than usual after a blow dry. Also, my hair was just a few shades darker, but nothing dramatic. The henna did seem to give my naturally mousy brown hair a richer brown tone. Overall, I am very happy with the results and would definitely color with henna again. The process is quite long and messy, however my hair was super soft and smooth afterwards, making it worth the trouble!

The full “after” shot (with Charlotte). Again, this was with just a blow dry and no straitening. Normally, my hair would be MUCH frizzier prior to straightening. So, if you are looking for a new hair dyeing experience, give henna a try!
